“And He took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to them.” Luke 22:19

The simplicity of “saying grace” is maybe the most profound act of worship. This retelling of the example Jesus set, reminds us over and over again how He humbly gave thanks. This picture is even more meaningful in that the bread represents His own body – broken for us. This Last Supper, this Passover meal, the meal of remembrance, is the transitional meal to the sharing of communion in the new covenant.

We, the spiritual descendants of Abraham, join with the physical descendants to celebrate our freedom from slavery. Jesus is very deliberate and it is no mistake how He speaks of the elements of the bread and the wine – His body and His blood. Just as the perfect lambs were sacrificed at the time of the Passover, Jesus became the final lamb of sacrifice for our freedom.

So when I pause before a meal to give thanks – I am humbled and reminded that there is much more than food to be thankful for. Food gives us physical nourishment, but Jesus gives us spiritual nourishment and life – not just sustainable everlasting life, but life here… to the full. Abundantly Full. Let us give thanks – Amen.
