Reflections of Joy: Generosity not Prosperity

When the bills come in and the bank account looks low, this is the exact time when I am reminded to live generously. So many times in the past, I have faced these situations and my natural way of thinking is to hold back and to act miserly, but the Lord has shown me over and over again that this is the time to have a generous heart. My first response must be to take my small resources and present them to God and then to listen to His whispers of wisdom.
I give Him the first fruits and then I take care of the bills as best I can, all the while with a thankful heart. If there’s not enough I present the shortfall to Him and watch to see what He will do.
And then, I remind myself to live with a generous attitude, not looking for personal prosperity but rather, look for creative ways to bless others. It doesn’t always require money. Sometimes it’s a word of encouragement, or giving something that I already have to someone who admires it. Or, just a cup of coffee or tea in my home. Living generously brings prosperity of the soul. God owns all the resources on this earth and He is well able to meet my financial needs at the drop of a hat, so there’s no cause for worry or concern. He takes care of the lilies in the fields and the birds in the air – how much more will He take care of me – His child.
When I look to my own ways and become stingy with my love, my grace and my finances, I lose my joy. But, when I maintain a generous heart and mind, I am blessed with peace, love & joy.
So, whether the finances are tight or plentiful, let me encourage you to live generously, full of grace and mercy.
