Reflections of Joy: Just a Leaf!

As I sit in my sunroom and consider the large maple tree outside my window and I think about how together the leaves on the tree provide shade and life giving oxygen to us. What good would the tree be if it only had one leaf, how much shade would one leaf provide and how much oxygen could it possibly produce?
And I think I am like a leaf on a tree; on my own, I am small and insignificant. Not many people are called to live large lives. Not many can be likened to the trunk of the tree. However, many of us are called to join with others here on earth to offer community; to offer shade and rich oxygen.
As I have hit a milestone in my life, I have come to the realization that my life has not been lived large. My contribution to my community is small. And really, only alongside the other leaves of my tree, have I been able to offer some shade during the hot summers of life. I hope that I have been able to give just a little good oxygen to those who needed it in the tough times. My colour is beginning to take on the golden hues, my time of green is slowly ebbing away and I consider the radiant beauty of the fall leaves. And, I must decide that in this next season, I will offer what I have, alongside the rest. Together we will become a glorious statement of the circle of life, full of colour and wonder.
