Psalm 127:1 “Unless the Lord builds the house, they labor in vain who build it; unless the Lord guards the city, the watchman stays awake in vain.” NKJV
Without the Lord’s presence, guidance, blessings and provision, my efforts are in vain. How many times, how many days and hours do I lolly-gag around in my own world, working hard, worrying, expressing negative thoughts, and behaving selfishly? Left to my own ways, it’s easy to fall prey to the enemy’s distractions. But when I start my day with the Lord, when I give Him my time and my efforts, He uses them for His good.
I find the discipline of giving thanks – of naming those things that I am thankful for (whether big or small) gives me the right perspective to start my day well. The downward spiral of negative thinking leads to destruction, but the uplifting source of praise, worship and thankfulness is like building my house upon a rock. My foundation is secure and my hope and trust rest in God Almighty and not on my own weak efforts.
I have SO much to be thankful for. Each day I am offered peace, joy and love to embrace, as well as a community of friends who will walk alongside me through the trials and the celebrations. And in this North American society, I am materially spoiled beyond what most of the world’s peoples can only dream of. So let me give thanks – fresh and new each day – building my house with the Lord.
