Reflections of Joy: Choose to Surrender

My desire is to live my life, serving the Lord, standing on His promises, obeying His Word and yet at times, I feel like I’m struggling. I consider those who have had a special immersion into the Spirit of God and have a manifested gift such as speaking in tongues. I wonder if they have an easier time tapping into the life of obedience and surrender? Does God speak to them more and are they more connected to the Lord? I long for a prayer life that is right at the foot of the Throne. Casting all my cares upon Him, for I know that He cares for me.

And then I consider my life - a life where I have experienced the consequences of sin; a life where I walk gingerly and carefully - skirting around circumstances that would have me falling back into temptation. I know all too well what comes of living recklessly for selfish motives, of holding onto my way and not heeding the Word of the Lord. And, whether I feel or sense the manifest presence of the Holy Spirit in my life, I hold fast to the indwelling presence, the knowledge of His place in my life.

And I remember the woman who poured the costly perfume on the feet of Jesus. She loved much, because she had been forgiven much. She worshipped and served Jesus with her tears and her possessions. She gave it all. Her dignity, her reputation, her savings in the form of costly perfume – she poured everything out to bless the Saviour. Was it easy for her? Is surrender ever easy?

We all live this life in our “earthsuit.” We all struggle with selfish motives. We all face surrender each day. Surrender is a choice. We must choose to follow. We must choose to worship. We must choose to offer praise. We must choose to pray and be faithful. Whether we have experienced amazing spiritual encounters, or lived day by day in the peace of knowing He abides with us, we must choose. I must choose.

As Joshua said to the Israelites so many years ago: “But if serving the Lord seems undesirable to you, then choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve... But as for me and my household, we will serve the Lord.” I choose this day, I choose the Lord.
