Reflections of Joy: Entitlement

Expectation and entitlement kill humility. This world of “have it now” thinking leads us to the place of demanding our own pleasure. When want and desires are not fulfilled quickly – we quickly get agitated, annoyed and demanding. This is a killer of humility. The Word of God says “God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble.” And “Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and He will lift you up.”
So I ask myself “How can I be humble? What do I need to do?” And I realize it’s not what I should do, but rather what should I not do?
I should not consider myself better or higher than anyone else. I should not expect or demand better treatment than others – and that is a sobering thought when I consider my fellow believers who have been persecuted and even martyred for their faith. Or even Jesus, my Lord, who was given as a sacrifice to pay the ransom for me. Why should I think I deserve better?
So Lord, I come to the foot of the cross and lay them down, all my expectations and demands – I give them to You. And as I simply come with delight for what you have already done for me, I ask You and trust You to sort through my wants and choose what are the sincere desires of my heart. I will trust You to meet those with pure motives and give me only those that You would deem best. May all glory and honour go to You Oh Lord. Amen.
