Whatever Age

I always wanted to be older. When I was a child I couldn't wait to get out of the tedium of school. When I was a teenager, I wanted to be grown up and confident. I thought that it would get easier as I got older and life would be smooth sailing. In some ways it’s easier to navigate life as a grownup but as you know, it’s never smooth sailing. I’ve had health crises and financial crises and job crises and… sometimes it seems like there’s no end in sight.

Being middle-aged does give you perspective though. When I look back, I realize that God has always been faithful. Psalm 37: 25 & 26 (NIV) says:

I was young and now I am old, yet I have never seen the righteous forsaken or their children begging bread. They are always generous and lend freely; their children will be a blessing.

I don’t think there is much that separates us from the person in the soup line or begging on the street except the mercy of God. God has always provided for me, so why should I fret? He has given me enough to allow me to give to those in need. These well-known verses, Psalm 37: 3 & 4 (NIV) tell us what our attitude should be like:

Trust in the Lord and do good; dwell in the land and enjoy safe pasture. Take delight in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart.

Here's to being whatever age and continuing to trust in the Lord!
