Kelly's Corner: What's in Your Hand?

I’ve had the privilege of facilitating the Gifted and Called Seminars held in our Canadian Pacific District this past year. Attendees have ranged in age from early twenties to mid-eighties.
One recent participant reported "I enjoyed myself so much and left with so much. I have questioned my calling all my life and always felt because of my circumstances I was never ever really able to follow, let alone hear my calling. I have had some amazing things happen in the last week and I am very excited about my walk with God and my calling." It has been such a joy to see women of all ages discover or rediscover their giftings, and to watch the Holy Spirit at work.
One of the seminar concepts is “What’s in your hand?” This teaching centres on using talents and resources readily at our disposal. My grandfather lived out this concept. He was a man of few words, I never heard him share the gospel, but he had a car. He used that car to get me to church and let those gifted in teaching lead me to Christ. I’m a Christian today in part because my grandfather faithfully drove me to church for 14 years (from age 2 to 16).
Do you have a closet full of fabric but no time for sewing? Why not donate the fabric to “Days for Girls” an amazing organization impacting girls around the globe by supplying feminine hygiene kits. These kits enable girls to stay in school. Without feminine supplies, girls in third world countries miss up to a week of school every month.
Do you have a garden? Last summer several of our church families were without work. I had an idea to set up a community sharing table. Each Sunday morning I set up a table outside the front doors and our congregation brought fresh fruits and vegetables from their gardens to share. As the summer progressed, people donated more than just vegetables. Cases of diapers, light bulbs and baby wipes were added. Everything brought was handed out. What a simple way for others to share their abundance.
Acts 2:44 says “And all the believers met together in one place and shared everything they had.” NLT Can you imagine the impact on our communities if every participant in our churches shared what they had?
If we all looked around our homes and shared what we didn’t really need? When our church name was mentioned in the community people couldn’t help but say “those people are great at sharing what they have with others.” Sometimes all it takes is an idea and a little creativity to make a difference.
